BRONX, N.Y. - Led by top-10 finishes by Adam Vess (Cromwell, Conn.) and William Griffin (Columbia, Conn.), the Marist men's cross country team finished second at the 2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships held at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx on Friday. The Red Foxes had five runners finish in the top-15 overall, led by Vess who placed seventh overall in the race, finishing with a time of 26:14.2. Griffin finished in 10th place with a time of 26:36.9.
Sophomore Conor Shelley (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) rounded out the Red Foxes' scoring pack, finishing 15th while covering the course at Van Cortlandt Park in 27:04.8.
The Red Foxes also had eight other runners finish in the top-40 of Friday's race. Junior Timothy Keegan (Huntington, N.Y.) placed 18th overall with a time of 27:17.2. Nick Webster (Latham, N.Y.) finished in 21st place, running a time of 27:21.4. Zachary Smetana (Niskayuna, N.Y.) ran to a 28th place finish in a time of 27:38.8. Freshman Sean Nestor (Madison, Conn.) finished in 34th place, with Matthew Janczyk (Bristol, Conn.) placing 36th overall. Patrick Duggan (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) finished in 37th place while Sam McMullen (Newton, N.J.) and Thomas Lipari (Greenvale, N.Y.) placing 39th and 40th respectively.
Iona, ranked 11th in the country by the United States Cross Country and Track and Field Coaches' Association, won its 19th consecutive MAAC Championship with 17 points. The Gaels had the top-three and five of the top six finishers in the race. Marist finished second for the fifth consecutive year with 57 points, 58 points clear of third-place Rider. Manhattan finished fourth with Loyola rounding out the top-five. Iona's Ryan Sheridan was the individual winner of the meet, finishing in a time of 25:37.1.
The Red Foxes now have two weeks to prepare for the NCAA Northeast Regional, which will be run at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. on Saturday, Nov. 14.
