WORCESTER, MASS. - Battling rainy conditions Saturday afternoon, the Marist men's lacrosse team lost to Holy Cross 9-4 at Hart Turf Field. Ryan Sharkey (West Field, N.J.), Paul Santavicca (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), Evan Guarini (Long Valley, N.J.), and Bob von Hoffman (Montclair, N.J.) each scored a goal for the Red Foxes. Marist is now 4-5 on the season.
The Red Foxes started the game strong, scoring the first two goals of the game. Guarini scored the first goal with 12:51 remaining in the opening quarter. Von Hoffman then put a Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) pass into the back of the net at the 9:58 mark to put Marist ahead 2-0. Holy Cross got on the board with 7:07 remaining in the first quarter as Matt Moran got an assist from Colin McGeehin on the Crusaders' first goal. The Crusaders then tied the game at 2-2 as McGeehin scored on a man-up opportunity, and added two more goals before the end of the quarter.
Holy Cross (3-9) dominated the second and third quarters. The Crusaders outshot Marist 22-6 and scored four more goals to take an 8-2 lead. The Red Foxes got back on the board as Santavicca scored to open the fourth quarter, making the score 8-3. Conor McKenna put in Holy Cross' final goal with 6:05 remaining to go ahead 9-3. Sharkey put in a goal with 53 seconds remaining to make the score 9-4.
The Crusaders outshot Marist for the game 34-19 and held a 24-21 advantage in ground balls. Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) made 11 saves in goal for the Red Foxes as Jimmy Harrison had 10 for the Crusaders.
Marist will continue its current road swing on Wednesday, April 15 with a 4 p.m. game at MAAC Lacrosse League opponent Providence.
