- The Marist women's swimming and diving team completed the most successful
regular season in program history with a 54 point victory over Seton Hall on
Saturday afternoon. After honoring six seniors
for their contributions to the program during their time at Marist, the
Red Foxes went out and dominated the Pirates of the Big East Conference with a
176-122 final score. Junior Kate Conard (East Setauket, N.Y.) and freshman
Greta Leberfinger (Chatham, N.J.) lead a group of six Red Foxes, who earned a
total of 13 victories at the meet.
Marist's winning began with a victory in the 200-yd
medley relay as the "A" team of Erica Vitale (Sterling, Conn.), Leberfinger,
Emily Miles (Long Valley, N.J.) and Michelle Fountain (Sayville, N.Y.) finished
with a time of 1:50.34.
Sophomore Bonnie Orr (Fresno, Calif.) was the next
victorious swimmer as she cruised to a 7.78 second win in the 1000-yd freestyle
with a final mark of 10:41.12.
Fountain, a senior, won the first of her two freestyle
races in the next event, the 200-yd freestyle. With a time of 1:54.00, she
defeated her nearest competitor by 2.48 seconds. Her second win came in the
100-yd freestyle, where she easily won again with a 53.67 time and 2.42 second margin.
Conard picked up the first of her three wins in the next
event, the 100-yd backstroke with a time of 59.17. Her next two wins came in
the 200-yd backstroke and the 500-yd freestyle. In the backstroke race, she earned
a 3.64 second margin of victory with a final time of 2:06.10, while it was an
8.66 margin in the 500. Conard's final time in that race was 5:02.48.
Leberfinger was the fourth individual to break into the
win column as she swept both of the breaststroke events. In each race she was
challenged by Seton Hall's Kerrie Kolackovsky, whom she held off in the 100-yd
event with a time of 1:05.46 and in the 200 at 2:23.56. The freshman's final win
of the day was in the 200-yd IM which she won in a time of 2:11.73, 0.37
seconds ahead of her teammate Vitale.
Miles was the final swimmer to earn a win on the
afternoon as she collected the 100-yd butterfly victory with a time of 58.40.
In diving action, freshman Kimberly Tobias (San Jose,
Calif.) was back to her winning ways as she swept both the 1-meter and 3-meter
boards. In the 1-meter, she won by 41.70 points at 252.15. She was challenged
by teammate Chelaine Eliazar (Honolulu, Hawaii) in the 3-meter with just a
20.33 point margin of victory at 247.50.
With these 13 event wins and resulting 176-122 victory,
the Marist Women's Swimming and Diving program had completed the winningiest regular
season in its history at 11-1.
Prior
to the meet in a short presentation, the Marist Athletic Department recognized
seniors Leanna Brittis (Bluffton, S.C.), Michelle Fountain (Sayville, N.Y.), Emily
Gardner (Fairport, N.Y.), Allison Kreho (Shelton, Conn.), Amanda Letchko
(Newton, N.J.) and Sondra McAdam (Redding, Conn).
After
today's regular season ending meet the team will be off for 18 days in
preparation of the MAAC Championships that begin on Thursday, Feb. 16 in
Buffalo, N.Y.
