LEONIA, New Jersey-Marist women's rowing traveled to Overpeck Park this past weekend to compete at the St. Joe's Invite against crews from Bucknell, St. Joe's, UConn, URI, UMass, Lehigh and GWU.Â
Marist boated a 1V8, 2V8 and Varsity 4. The format was a round robin style regatta which consisted of 4 boats matched up in the morning for each event and 4 different boats matched up in the afternoon in each event.
Â
The Varsity 8 consisted of coxswain
Abigail Cieplinski,Â
Gabrielle Insero,Â
Summer Starrett,Â
Emma Jauch,Â
Natalia Miklos, Katie Beichert, Natalie Ronan, Ashley Surette and Isabel Consavari.  In the morning race this crew knew it had its hands full and was focused on making improvements and calls it had worked on during the week. After another good start, the crew found itself behind URI and GWU and ahead of Bucknell who eventually proved to be stronger throughout the middle thousand after gaining the advantage and crossing the finish line going away.Â
Final Results: URI 7:02, GWU 7:06.5, Bucknell 7:08.5, Marist 7:28.3
In the afternoon race, this same crew raced against URI, St. Joe's and Lehigh. The boat was determined to outperform its morning race by committing to a stronger middle thousand meters. After a strong start and shift, Marist was a bit back from URI and ahead of St. Joe's and Lehigh. St. Joe's was tough and didn't stop fighting for the entire length of the course, but Marist was able to hold them off with a good sprint for 2
nd place, while at the same time finishing more closely to URI than in the morning round.Â
Final Results:Â URI 7:15.5, Marist 7:27.5, St. Joe's 7:29.0, Lehigh 7:40.0
Â
The 2
nd Varsity 8 consisted of coxswainÂ
Emma Spiro, Avalon Johnson,
Shelby McDougall,
Jessica Zygmunt,Â
Victoria Stout,
Dreama Manganiello,
Kaleigh Tompkins,Â
Rebecca Paul andÂ
Jen Liguori. In the morning race, our 2V had a few less than perfect strokes off the start, but fought its way down the buoy line and finished the race eager to improve upon its morning results later on in the afternoon.
Final Results:Â URI 7:21.5, GWU 7:21.9, Bucknell 7:28.7, Marist 7:58.4
In the afternoon race, this crew was also matched up with URI, St. Joe's and Lehigh. The Red Foxes got off the line better and had a solid shift to race pace and battled well for the first half of the race at which point Lehigh gained the advantage and maintained its 3
rd place position ahead of Marist in 4
th. This young crew continues to make excellent progress and is gaining speed every time it goes out for practice or down a racecourse and we are excited to see what can be accomplished over the next 5 weeks.
Final Results:Â URI 7:27.0, St. Joe's 7:45.4, Lehigh 7:51.6, Marist 7:55.8
Â
The Varsity 4 consisted of coxswainÂ
Ariana Novero, Casey Hodge,
Courtney Clark,
Sydney Macchia,
Alexandra Gibeault, and
Emily Liguori. In the morning race the 4 had a decent start, but struggled to establish a comfortable race base rhythm which ultimately affected the boat's speed. The crew was determined to improve upon this race pace in the afternoon and remained upbeat after the morning session.
Final Results:Â URI 8:09.7, Bucknell 8:21.3, GWU 8:38.9, Marist 8:54.3
In the afternoon our 4 raced well and had a very exciting race with St. Joe's and Lehigh. Marist was in front of both for about 750m when St. Joe's made a push and gained a 2 seat lead.  Marist then regained the lead by a seat, but ultimately St. Joe's had a stronger move toward the end and took 2
nd place while Marist finished 3
rd and Lehigh 4
th.
Final Results:Â URI 8:11.7, St. Joe's 8:38.9, Marist 8:41.3, Lehigh 9:16.4
Â
Overall, the entire team gained valuable racing experience and was able to improve upon certain parts of the race between the morning to the afternoon sessions.  Thank you SJU for hosting the well-run regatta.
