Marist Athletics Department Holds Senior Awards Dinner

Carrington, Phippen, Leonard-Osbourne, Sallam Honored As Sportspeople of the Year

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist Athletics Department honored the Class of 2023 on Tuesday night in the McCann Center Recreational Gym.
 
All senior student-athletes were individually recognized by their head coaches. Following these introductions, special and major awards were issued.
 
Special Recognition Award
This was presented to senior Sean Ginsberg, a familiar and friendly who has been a dedicated worker throughout his four years on campus. Sean has been an event staff worker and football manager who has also supported various teams on the road. He drew a standing ovation when presented with his award.
 
Strength & Conditioning Awards
The team awards were captured by softball for the second straight year and men's lacrosse for the ninth time.
 
The Advantage Sport Strength & Conditioning award winners were Shinae Carrington of water polo and Justin Iaccio of football. Carrington was the fourth water polo winner of the award, and Iaccio was the 12th football player to capture it.
 
Academic Awards
The Athletic Director's Award is given annually to the women's and men's teams with the highest cumulative grade-point average. This year's winners are volleyball and men's tennis. Volleyball won for the second straight year, and men's tennis won for the fourth straight time and 17th time overall.
 
The President's Academic Achievement Award is given annually to the male and female student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average. Our winners this year are Greta Stuckey (women's cross country/track & field) and Jack Parsons (men's cross country/track & field). Stuckey was the fifth female cross country/track & field athlete to win the award, and Parsons was the seventh male cross country/track & field athlete to capture it.
 
Pizzani Award
The James E. Pizzani Award has been given out to honor the life of James Pizzani, '64 since 1990. Pizzani, who was an advocate for Marist Athletics during his life, lost his battle with nine-month battle with cancer in 1988. The award is presented to a male and female (does not have to be a student-athlete) who has contributed to the athletic department, both academically and socially, displaying community service and leadership, and has performed above and beyond all expectations. 
 
This year's winners are Sara Leavens (women's cross country/track & field) and Dylan Hoy (baseball). Leavens became the fourth women's cross country/track & field athlete to win the award, and Hoy is the second baseball player to earn it.
 
Sportsperson of the Year
This award is presented to the top female and male student-athletes of the course of their Marist careers.
 
The women's co-winners are Shinae Carrington (water polo) and Calista Phippen (softball). Carrington became the second water polo athlete to win the award and Phippen became the fifth softball player. Carrington is the third female student-athlete in school history to win the Strength & Conditioning award as well as Sportsperson of the Year
 
The men's co-winners are Glenmour Leonard-Osbourne (track & field, football) and Ahmed Sallam (swimming). Leonard-Osbourne is the 10th football player and eighth track & field athlete to be honored, while Sallam is the seventh member of the swimming & diving program.
