Carballo Named MAAC Water Polo Defensive Player of Year

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Marist water polo senior co-captain Diana Carballo was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year as was voted by the conference's head coaches and was announced at the MAAC Water Polo Awards Show on Friday evening.

In addition to her Defensive Player of the Year award, Carballo was also named to the All-MAAC First Team.

Senior co-captain Jessica Hermosillo, junior co-captain Katherine Tijerina and sophomore Justine Castro were named to the All-MAAC Second Team.

As a team, the Red Foxes also had a league leading 13 student-athletes named to the MAAC All-Academic Team. To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must have completed two semesters at their institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale. Marist's All-Academic nominations were Carballo, juniors Susan Cantoni, Grace Doerfler, Ariana Singer, Tijerina, Hope Vickers and Caoimhe Whitebloom, sophomores Megan Clarke, Carolyn Gauvin, Castro, Carsen Horvatich, Anais Mathes and Lexi Puhl.

The #2 Red Foxes will square off vs the #3 Iona Gaels on Saturday, April 28 in the MAAC semi-finals at McCann Natatorium (2 p.m.). The game will be streamed on ESPN3 and fans can follow along on live stats and follow @MaristWP on Twitter for in game updates.
