POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – As the current Marist baseball team enters the final month of the 2018 regular season schedule, several former players are just in the beginning stages of their individual seasons within professional baseball. It's time to take a look at where they are and what they're up to.
Kevin McCarthy (2011-13) – Kansas City Royals (MLB):
McCarthy is currently in the midst of his first stint with the Royals in 2018, having been called up from the Omaha Stormchasers on April 13 after beginning the year in the minors. So far, McCarthy has made eight appearances for the Royals and currently stands at 2-0 with a 3.52 ERA. In 7.2 IP, he has given up four runs (three earned) on 10 hits with four strikeouts. McCarthy made 33 appearances with Kansas City in 2017 and 10 in 2016, after becoming the first former Red Fox to have his contract purchased by an MLB team and was the first to appear in an MLB game when he made his debut on Sept. 9th at the Chicago White Sox. In 51 career MLB appearances with the Royals, he is 4-0 with a 3.69 ERA and in 61 IP, has given up 35 runs (25 earned) on 71 hits with 38 career strikeouts.
Scott Boches (2014-17) – Clinton Lumberkings (Class A):
Boches was recently assigned to the Class A Clinton Lumberkings as he looks to begin his second season in professional baseball. After being drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 30
th Round of the 2017 MLB Draft, Boches spent time on the Arizona League Mariners (Rookie), the Everett Aqua Sox (Short Season A) and the Arkansas Travelers (AA) in 2017. He is 1-0 with a 5.61 ERA and in 11 appearances has thrown 25.2 IP with 15 strikeouts.
Zach Shank (2010-13) – Tacoma Rainiers (AAA):
Shank is currently on the 7-day disabled list as a member of the Tacoma Rainiers, the AAA affiliate of the Mariners. He was assigned to the Mariners for both the 2017 and 2018 Spring Training, playing in 22 games with a.368 average in 2017. In 512 minor league games, Shank has a .259 average with 454 hits, 86 doubles, 18 home runs, 256 runs scored, 179 RBI, a .327 OBP and a .370 SLG.
Ricky Pacione (2008-11) – Cleveland Indians (MLB):
Pacione currently serves as the bullpen catcher for the Indians and became the first former Red Fox to be affiliated with a team that played in the World Series when the Indians played the Chicago Cubs in the 2016 Fall Classic. He also served as one of the catchers in the 2017 Home Run Derby and was on the American League Coaching Staff for the 2017 MLB All-Star Game.
