Tim Smith

11397 Entering his 21st season at Marist, head coach Tim Smith has taken the Red Foxes to the highest level of success during his time with the team. His teams have won 12 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships have compiled a record-setting 137-9 mark in the MAAC. Smith has been named MAAC Coach of the Year four times in his tenure.

  • The Red Foxes have competed in 12 NCAA Tournaments under Smith, a Marist College record.
  • He has taken the program to the University of Texas at Austin, Baylor, LSU, Harvard, Alabama, Mississippi State, Florida, USC, University of California-Berkeley, and TCU.

  • In Smith's 20 years at the helm of the Red Foxes, he has compiled a 337-105 record. He has coached the men's team at Marist to 329 wins, while earning eight as head coach of the women's tennis team.
  • The program’s last MAAC championship in 2014-15 capped off a remarkable run of six championships in the previous seven seasons.
  • The Red Foxes have totaled 11 perfect seasons in MAAC play under Smith.
  • In 2011, Smith's team took home 11 out of the 12 MAAC postseason awards. The Red Foxes swept all six awards at the singles positions as well as second and third doubles, Rookie of the Year, Player of the Year and Coach of the Year.
  • His teams and players are regularly recognized by the ITA for their academic excellence and have won every tennis award offered by the MAAC.

  • Smith was an ETA-USTA National Team Coach, an ETA Junior Davis Cup Coach and a USPTA Level I teaching professional.
  • Smith was named the USPTA Coach of the Year for the Eastern Section in 1993, 1995 and 2009.
  • Recipient of the Presidential Sports Award for Tennis.

  • Seniors Loic Sessagesimi and Christian Coley became the first players to reach the 60 team, 128-draw ITA Regional Tournament Round of 16 in November.
  • Sessagesimi reached the quarterfinals to net the highest individual finish under Smith's tutelage.

  • Registered an 80-4 record over four years at Dutchess County Community College and one year at SUNY Oswego.
  • While at Dutchess, he coached three nationally ranked teams, two of which finished in the top 10 and three junior college All-Americans.
  • Guided numerous students to receive state and national rankings.
  • Smith was inducted into the Dutchess County Sports Museum Hall of Fame for his contributions to tennis and the community.

  • Smith graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education from SUNY Geneseo, where he lettered in tennis and was captain of the team.
  • He received his Masters of Science from SUNY Albany in Student Personnel in Higher Education and his Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) in administration from SUNY New Paltz.
  • Former Naval officer, graduating from Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. Served three seven month tours of duty off the coast of Vietnam (1968-71)
  • A native of Lockport, N.Y., Smith presently resides in Hyde Park, N.Y., with his wife Ann. They have two children, Shannon and Tim Jr. and six grandchildren: Ella, Ryan, Sienna, Rachael, Tyler, and Hudson.
