The mission of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is to serve as a vehicle to promote communication between the athletic administration and student-athletes at Marist by providing a student-athlete voice within the department, discussing issues and concerns, and providing feedback as necessary.
SAAC also serves in a leadership role recruiting fellow student-athletes to serve the campus, Poughkeepsie, and the surrounding area through a variety of community service programs and events. Further, it is our privilege and responsibility to enhance the relationships between the Athletic Department and all other realms within Marist Univeristy.
SAAC is a fantastic way to further strengthen the bonds within the student-athlete community. Through SAAC, athletes are granted a voice in the administration and receive opportunities to become involved in their community. SAAC helps athletes to develop skills whereby they can enhance existing leadership characteristics.
- Purpose
- Provide a communications link between student-athletes and the athletics’ administration in the development of policies affecting all student-athletes.
- Encourages communication and unity between and among teams.
- Promotes and supports athletics.
The Committee meets a minimum of once a month beginning in September to discuss
policies, issues and projects relating to student-athletes, teams and the department.
- Membership
The Committee is composed of:
- Two representatives from each of the 23 intercollegiate programs
- The Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator
- Two Facilitators
- Six Subcommittees- Athletics, Communications, Community Service, Events, Inclusion and Advocacy, and Leadership
Each program/team has one (1) vote in all matters before the Committee.
- Elections
Team representatives are elected or appointed at the discretion of the head coach or Associate
AD/SWA. Any student-athlete is eligible for election but each should carefully consider
his or her academic and athletic responsibilities, as membership on the Committee is an
important component of acting as a team’s representative.
- Responsibilities
Each team representative is expected to:
- Attend all Committee meetings.
- Attend any and all other Committee activities.
- Represent his or her team’s views at Committee meetings (This means team representatives must talk to their teammates about issues or projects, which will be discussed at Committee meetings. Coaches will allow time before or after practice for a representative’s report).
- Report to his or her team on what happened at Committee meetings and distribute the minutes of meetings.
- Organize team members to help with any special projects.
- Officers
No later than the first meeting of each fall, a President and Executive Board named. The Executive Board is made up of the Chair people of each of the six subcommittees. These
members will have the following responsibilities:
- Chair all Committee meetings and act as the official representatives of the Committee.
- Represent Marist on MAAC SAAC conference calls.
Meet with Associate AD/SWA to create monthly meeting agenda and collaborate on SAAC projects.
