Syracuse, NY--The Marist College women's water polo team opened the 2002 season at the Utica Touranment today. The Red Foxes defeated the host 22-3 in the opening match, before falling to Hartwick, the 14th ranked team in the nation 15-2.
In the win over Utica Marist received goals from 13 different players during the contest, led by the four goals and one assist effort of Alyson Fiorello. Sarah Lawlor tallied three goals, and an assist, while Susan Grant also scored three times for Marist. Ashley Woerner had two goals and two assists in the victory for Marist.
Red Fox goalkeeper Liz Sovern had 14 saves for Marist in the win over Utica.
Marist took control of the contest early scoring eight goals in the first quarter and tallying seven more in the second stanza, to take a 15-1 lead at the intermission. Marist held Utica scoreless in both the second and third quarters, giving up a goal in the first period and then two in the fourth quarter when the game was already decided. Marist tallied six goals in the third quarter.
