College Park, MD - A seven-run ninth inning rally by Marist (5-0) delivered the Terps (3-7, 0-0 ACC) a heartbreaking 9-7 loss today, spoiling a strong performance by starter Sean Kane.
Kane, who entered the game with two losses despite giving up just two earned runs in his last start, struck out nine and walked two in 8.1 innings.
He had allowed just two runs through eight innings, before giving up a two-run home run to start the ninth.
Marist went on to score seven runs in the inning on just three hits. Shortstop Kyle George (0-1) made his second relief appearance with the bases loaded in two days, but could not duplicate his previous success.
On Friday, George moved from short to the mound and bailed the team out of a bases loaded jam by striking out the only two batters he faced to end the inning. Today, he walked in a run before giving up a three-run single to Matt Griffiths (Los Altos, CA), aided by a misplay by defensive replacement Brian Jarosinski in right field.
Tim Allen (Wappingers Falls, NY) hit his third home run in two days, blasting a 410-foot home run off of Kane in the seventh that bounced off of the varsity team house beyond left field. On Friday, Allen hit two home runs, a double, and had four RBI.
John McGorty (West Sayville, NY) and Jimmy Board (Ambler, PA) led Marist with two hits and a run scored each, with McGorty also adding a home run and two RBI.
The Red Foxes look to sweep the series versus Maryland on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
