Allen Homers In 12th To Lead Marist 5-4 Win Over Vermont

April 22, 2003

Box Score

Poughkeepsie, NY - Marist senior baseball player Tim Allen (Wappingers Falls, NY) ended a 12-inning game with a leadoff homerun as the Red Foxes defeated visiting Vermont this afternoon on the McCann Baseball Field. The Red Foxes have now won five straight games, and improve to 23-10-1 on the year, while the Catamounts drop to 18-6.

In a pitching dual, Allen took the second pitch of his leadoff at-bat in the bottom of the 12th innings, and drove it over the left field fence to earn the win. Chris Homer (Jamesville, NY) became the winning pitcher for Marist, striking out seven in his 5.0 innings of work, to improve to 2-1.

Marist starter Scott Chambers (Albany, NY) pitched well, striking out six in his 7.0 innings of work. He allowed two runs on six hits and left with a 2-1 lead and a runner on second base. Homer gave up a triple and a sacrifice fly in the seventh in relief, as Vermont took a 3-2 lead. The Catamounts added an unearned run in the ninth, taking a 4-2 lead into the Red Foxes last at-bat.

After Vermont reliever Jared Slater (Salem, NY) retired the first two batters in the ninth, he walked Eric Johnson (Park Forest, IL) on a 3-2 pitch. Keith Brachold (Attleboro, MA) followed with a double, and both scored on an Andy Kiriakedes (Great Barrington, MA) single up the middle.

Both teams had a runner in scoring position, Marist in the 10th and Vermont in the 11th, but nothing developed. The Catamounts then put runners on first and second with one out in the 12th when Bobby Tewksbary (Hudson, NH) hit a long fly ball to right field, that appeared to be over Brachold's head. However, Brachold made the catch over the shoulder and relayed the ball to second base for the inning ending double play, setting up Allen's heroics.

Brachold was 2-6 with two runs scored in the game and extended his career-long hitting streak to 19 games with a single in his first at-bat. Kiriakedes, playing with 15 stitches in his mouth after being hit on Monday, was 3-6 with two RBI, and Allen went 2-6. John McGorty (West Sayville, NY) was 2-5 with a run scored in the outing.

Jeff Dixon (Brattleboro, MA) started for the Catamounts, and allowed just two runs on eight hits, striking out four in 6.0 innings of work. Slater allowed two runs on three hits in 2.2 innings, and Brett Dobens (Hudson, NH) took the loss (0-1) allowing one run on two hits in his 2.1 innings of work.

The Red Foxes return to action on Wednesday, April 23rd, hosting Brown in a 2:00 pm double-header on the McCann Field. The games are both scheduled for seven-innings.
