Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Sophomore Nick Chevalier won three individual events to help the Marist men's swimming and diving team (2-0, 1-0 MAAC) defeat defending conference champions Rider 148.5 - 94.5 today at McCann Center Natatorium for its 55th consecutive MAAC victory, dating back to 1996. Seniors Matt Castillo and Jeff Paul were double winners for the Red Foxes.
Chevalier won the 1000 freestyle in 9:46.71 while also taking the 200 butterfly (1:55.61) and the 500 freestyle (4:46.69) to pace the Red Foxes past the visiting Broncs.
Co-captains Castillo and Paul each picked up two wins: Castillo took the 200 individual medley (1:54.56) and the 200 breaststroke (2:07.97) while Paul was the top finisher in the 50 freestyle (22.09 seconds) and the 100 freestyle (48.14 seconds). The 200 breaststroke was a clean sweep for Marist as juniors Joe Pilewski and Brian Sankowski took second and third, respectively. Pilewski also placed second in the 200 IM and 200 butterfly.
The Red Foxes were also victorious in both the 400 medley and 400 freestyle relays. The medley relay, made up of sophomore Dan Garaffa, Castillo, junior Kevin Connors and Paul, won in 3:29.25. The 400 freestyle relay touched first in a time of 3:15.74. Swimmers for Marist were freshman Mike MacDonald, sophomore Will Shearouse, sophomore Patrick Collins and freshman Greg Jablonski. The relay times were the fastest in a dual meet in school history.
Senior Sam Engle led Rider with wins in the 200 freestyle and 200 backstroke.
Marist will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 13 when it hosts a tri-meet against MAAC foes Fairfield and St. Peter's. Start time is 1 p.m.
