POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.- The Marist Men's Swimming and Diving team got the season off on the right note on Thursday night when they defeated Fordham 140-101 at the McCann Natatorium in Poughkeepsie.
The Red Foxes were led by sophomore Ralph Rienzo (Wallingford, Conn) and junior Pat Collins (Nutley, N.J.), both won two events on the night. Rienzo won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:57.19 and the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:49.44. Collins was a winner in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle in times of 22.20 and 48.46 seconds, respectively. Other individual winners for the Red Foxes were Greg Jablonski (Massapequa, N.Y.) in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.08, Joe Pilewski (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:55.19 and Dan Garaffa (Manchester, Conn.) in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:55.96.
In relay action Marist took the top spot in the 400-yard medley and the 400-yard freestyle. The team of Collins, Rashad Sutton (Springvalle, N.Y.), Kevin Connors (Holmedel, N.J.) and Jablonski beat the field in the 400-yard medley relay, posting a time of 3:35.65. In the 400-yard freestyle relay Nick Chevalier (Milford, N.H.), Rienzo, Kevin Bobenchik (Rahway, N.J.) and Brandon Youse (Boyertown, Pa.) took the top spot in 3:17.13.
Sophomore Jesus Santos (Haverstraw, N.Y.) took second place in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. In 3-meter action Santos posted a score of 226.45, while he showed a final score of 244.30 in the 1-meter competition. Fordham's Donnie Callara took first in both events posting scores of 266.10 and 273.80 in the 3-meter and 1-meter, respectively.
With the win Marist runs their record to 1-0 and will be back in the pool on Saturday, November 5 when they travel to Rider.
