POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.- A week after their 60 MAAC dual meet winning streak came to an end at Rider last week, the Marist Men's Swimming and Diving team rebounded for a 176-99 victory over Fairfield on Saturday. The Red Foxes were led by Pat Collins (Nutley, N.J.) and Will Shearouse (Milford, N.H.) who both won two events. With the win Marist improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the MAAC.
In what was a dominant day for Marist Collins took the first position in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.39. He was followed by teammates Nick Chevalier (Milford, N.H.) who finished second in 1:47.12 and Dan Garaffa (Manchester, Conn.) who took third with a time of 1:51.16. Collins also won the 200-yard backstroke, clocking in at 1:59.85. He was again followed by two teammates in Kevin Connors (Holmedel, N.J.) who finished second and Kevin Bobenchik (Rahway, N.J.) who took third in times of 2:02.54 and 2:03.62, respectively.
Shearouse was the top finisher in the 50-yard freestyle, posting a time of 22.59 seconds. Connors followed him in second place in 23.12 seconds. Shearouse was also victorious in the 200-yard backstroke, as he led the field in a time of 2:21.24.
On the afternoon Marist took the top spot in 11 events. Other winners for the Red Foxes were Spencer Hartmann (Windsor, Conn.) in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:17.33. Alex Troxell (Andreas, Pa.) followed him in second place with a time of 10:22.91. Joe Pilewski (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) and Bobenchik went one, two in the 100-yard backstroke showing times of 53.89 and 55.91 seconds, respectively. Freshman Rashad Sutton (Spring Valley, N.Y.) won the 100-yard breaststroke, while Greg Jablonski (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Hartmann took the top two spots in the 200-yard butterfly. Hartman also finished second in the 100-yard freestyle as he followed Gafarra, who took first in 50.15 seconds.
In diving action, Marist swept the top three positions in both events. Devon "O'Nalty (East Hartford, Conn.) and Jesus Santos won the three and one meter events respectively with scores of 260.00 and 243.60. Santos would take second in the three-meter with a score of 233.80, while O'Nalty had a third place finish off the one-meter board showing a score of 219.75. John Luboja (New York, N.Y.) took third in the three-meter event with a score of 217.45 and finished second off the one-meter with a final tally of 228.00.
Following the win, Marist will prepare for MAAC foe Iona who will visit the McCann Center on Tuesday night. The meet on the 12th is scheduled for 7 p.m.
