LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J.- For the first time in their 10 years in the MAAC the Marist Men's Swimming and Diving team was defeated in a regular season dual meet by a MAAC opponent. Rider toped Marist 127.5-115.5 at the Richard A. Coppola Pool at Maurer Center on Saturday afternoon.
Marist came into the meet at 60-0 in MAAC duel meets and had won nine of the 10 MAAC Championships they have competed in, with Rider winning the only one they have not in 2004.
Joe Pilewski (Lake Hopatcong, N.J) had a strong day for Marist as he won two individual events and finished second in a third. Pilewski won the 200-yard butterfly and the 200-yard breaststroke in times of 1:57.02 and 2:12.67, respectively. He finished second in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:58.55.
Other strong performances for Marist were turned in by Nick Chevalier (Milford, N.H.) who finished second in 200-yard butterfly and third in the 500-yard freestyle in times of 1:59.46 and 4:51.68. Freshman Spencer Hartmann (Windsor, Conn.) won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:47.76 and was a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay team along with Kevin Bobenchik (Rahway, N.J.), Ralph Rienzo (Wallingford, Conn.) and Kevin Collins (Nutley, N.J.) that won in 3:15.49.
In diving, Jesus Santos (Haverstraw, N.Y.) took second in the one-meter event with a score of 217.65, while Devon O'Nalty (East Hartford, Conn.) took third posting a score of 213.75. O'Nalty went on to finish third in the three meter event with a score of 221.32.
With the defeat Marist fell to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in MAAC competition. They will be back in the pool on November 12 when they host Fairfield. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the James. J. McCann Natatorium.
