POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist Red Foxes men's swimming and diving team opened their home portion of the 2008-09 season. In the first of four home meets, the Red Foxes fell to the Rider Broncs 173-127 at the McCann Center Natatorium on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Foxes had two first place individual winners, senior Spencer Hartmann (Windsor, Conn.) and freshman Kevin Shoemaker (Saucon Valley, Pa.), in addition to the men's 400-yd. freestyle relay team.
Hartmann won the 500-yd. and 1,000-yd. freestyle for the second consecutive meet with times of 4:44.84 and 9:51.59 respectively. In the 500-yd. freestyle he bested the field by over 13 seconds, while in the 1,000-yd. freestyle he won the race by over nine seconds.
Shoemaker took first place in the 200-yd. butterfly with a time of 1:56.69. He won the 200-yd. butterfly for the second consecutive meet. Shoemaker also took second place in the 100-yd. butterfly with a time of 52.66 seconds.
The 400-yd. freestyle relay team of sophomore Keith Miller (Missoula, Mont.), Hartmann, and sophomores Joshua Sklanka (Watertown, Conn.) and Angelo Ciraolo (Grand Island, N.Y.), won their event with a time of 3:19.30.
With the loss, Marist falls to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference meets. Marist still holds the edge all-time against Rider in MAAC dual meets, with a record of 11-2.
Marist will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. host Fairfield, for a MAAC meet.
