NEW ROCHELLLE, N.Y. - The Marist men's swimming and diving team improved to 13-0 in dual meets against Iona since joining the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). Wednesday night, the Red Foxes defeated the Gaels handily, 164-90.
Senior Spencer Hartmann (Windsor, Conn.), junior Luke Johnson (Pensacola, Fla.) and freshman Kevin Shoemaker (Saucon Valley, Pa.) each won two events to pace Marist in the meet. Hartmann won both the 500-yd. and 1,000-yd. freestyle events with times of 4:56.72 and 10:14.19 respectively.
Johnson won the 200-yd. freestyle and backstroke. His time in the freestyle was 1:48.32, while he finished with a time of 1:57.47 in the backstroke. Johnson was also a part of the Marist men's 400-yd. medley relay team that finished first with a time of 3:36.50. His relay team consisted of senior Mark Esolen (Archbald, Pa.), Shoemaker, and sophomore Keith Miller (Missoula, Mont.).
Shoemaker won the 200-yd. IM with a time of 2:01.88, and the 200-yd. butterfly with a time of 1:59.53.
In the diving portion of the meet, MAAC diver of the week, Brian Bolstad (Highland, N.Y.) won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 259.33. Bolstad finished second to Marist sophomore Connor Cyrus (Hanover, N.H.) in 3-meter diving. Cyrus' winning score was 214.73. The first place finish for Cyrus was the first of his Marist career.
The Marist swimming and diving program will return to action on Dec. 5 and Dec. 6. The teams will travel to Baltimore, Md. for a meet with Delaware, Drexel and Loyola (Md.). The meet is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on Dec. 5 and 10 a.m. on Dec. 6.
