BALTIMORE, Md. - The Marist College men's swimming and diving team competed in the H2Ounds Invitational hosted by Loyola (Md.) College in Baltimore. The two-day competition put the Red Foxes against a field of three other teams: the Delaware Blue Hens, the Villanova Wildcats and the host Loyola Greyhounds.
The Red Foxes fell to Delaware 226-143 and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Loyola, 229-140. However, Marist did beat Villanova easily, 271-94.
On day one of the event, Marist captured three third place finishes, one second place finish and one first place finish. Sophomore Brian Bolstad (Highland, N.Y.) won the one-meter diving event with a score of 268.35.
Freshman Patrick Shea (Peabody, Mass.) was Marist's top finisher in the 500-yd. freestyle. Shea finished in second place with a time of 4:37.85.
In the 50-yd. freestyle, sophomore Angelo Ciarolo (Grand Island, N.Y.) came in third with a time of 21.33 seconds. Freshman Kevin Shoemaker (Saucon Valley, Pa.) finished third in the 200-yd. IM. His time was 1:57.06. The Marist 400-yd. medley relay team of sophomores Joshua Sklanka (Watertown, Conn.) and Steven Vendetta (South Windsor, Conn.), freshman Kevin Quinn (Nesponsit, N.Y.) finished their event with a time of 3:40.00. That time was good for third place.
In the morning session on Saturday, the Red Foxes got their lone first place swimming finish from Shea. He won the 1,650-yd. freestyle with a time of 16:01.92. Senior Spencer Hartmann (Windsor, Conn.) came in third with a time of 16:42.45.
Also in the morning session, the Red Foxes took second place in the 200-yd. freestyle relay and the 200-yd. freestyle. Sophomore Keith Miller (Missoula, Mont.) took second in the individual event with a time of 1:44.67, while the relay team of Miller, Vendetta, Sklanka and Ciarolo finished in second place also with a time of 1:24.74.
In the men's afternoon session, the diving corps took first off the one-meter board and first and second off the three-meter board. Bolstad won both events with scores of 278.5 in the one-meter and 276.5 in the three-meter. Junior Mitchell Katz (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) finished four points behind Bolstad off the three-meter board.
Shoemaker finished third in both the 100-yd. fly and 200-yd. fly. His times were 51.93 and 1:55.40 respectively. The 100-yd. fly was raced in the morning, while the 200-yd. was in the afternoon session.
Following day one of the H2Ounds Invitational, Marist held a 58-50 lead over Delaware, an 89-21 advantage over Villanova. Conversely the Red Foxes trailed the Greyhounds 68-42.
Marist will return to action on January 10, 2009. The Red Foxes will host Lehigh in a dual meet scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the McCann Center Natatorium.
