Final Stats
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Marist baseball team opened Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader split against Fairfield on Saturday. The Red Foxes dropped the first game by a score of 1-0 before rebounding for a 3-0 triumph in the second game.
B.J. Martin (Manalapan, N.J.) tossed a complete-game shutout in the seven-inning second game, allowing just three hits. Martin struck out four and walked two to earn his first victory as a Red Fox.
Marist gave Martin all the support he would need by scoring twice in the top of the first before adding another run in the fourth. Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.), Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.) had two hits apiece for Marist.
The Red Foxes managed just two hits in the first game. Junior left-hander Josh Rickards (Glenolden, Pa.) took the loss for Marist, allowing the game's only run in 6.1 innings of work. Rickards gave up just five hits and struck out five. He was relieved by freshman righty Brendan Chapin (South Weymouth, Mass.), who tossed 1.2 scoreless innings.
Marist now stands at 4-8 on the season. The Red Foxes and Stags will complete their three-game series on Monday at 1 p.m.
