POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Behind freshman Colleen Lischwe's (Kirkwood, Mo.) five goals, the Marist women's water polo team won their home opener against Queens College 15-4 on Saturday at the McCann Center. The Red Foxes are now 15-6 on the season.
Sophomore utility Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) added three goals, all in the second half. Emily St. Omer Roy (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and Kristen Powers (Los Altos, Calif.) scored her first goal of the season on Saturday, as Kaitlin McMurray (Dexter, Mich.) and Jessica Stevenson (San Clemente, Calif.) also tallied for Marist. Senior goalie Elizabeth Davis (Albuquerque, N.M.) made six saves in the game and also had three assists. Freshman utility Rosie Pauli (Sacramento, Calif.) led the Red Fox defense with six steals.
It was Queens College that took control of the game early, as Shannon Church scored the Lady Knights' first two goals of the game to take an early lead in the first quarter. Marist got on the board with 41 seconds remaining in the first, as Lischwe notched her first goal of the game. The Red Foxes took over from there and never looked back, outscoring Queens 5-0 in the second quarter to take a 6-2 lead at halftime. Marist scored nine of the last 11 goals in the game.
Marist will host the first day of MAAC Water Polo League play next Saturday. The Red Foxes will take on Siena at 10 a.m. and Iona at 4 p.m. Marist will honor seniors Elizabeth Davis and Maggie Hatcher prior to the Iona game.
