NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team extended its winning streak to five on Sunday, as the Red Foxes earned a doubleheader sweep at Iona. Marist prevailed by a score of 2-1 in the seven-inning first game, and posted a 6-4 triumph in the nine-inning nightcap.
In game one, freshman left-hander Sean McKeown (Hillborough, N.J.) pitched 3.2 scoreless inning of relief to earn his first collegiate victory. McKeown entered the game in the fourth in relief of starter B.J. Martin (Manalapan, N.J.) and finished the game, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out two.
The Red Foxes were trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning of the first game when a single by sophomore shortstop Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored senior catcher Keith Glasser (Rensselaer, N.Y.). Marist took the lead for good the next inning when sophomore left fielder Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.) singled and came around to score from third on a two-out error.
In game two, the Red Foxes started quickly by scoring three runs in the first. The big blow came off the bat of junior right fielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.), who had a two-run single with the bases loaded.
However, Iona chipped away by scoring single runs in the first and third, and grabbed the lead in the sixth by scoring two runs. Marist tied the game in the eighth on an RBI single by freshman center fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.), which scored Gauck. The Red Foxes took the lead with two runs in the ninth, as freshman second baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) laced a triple, which scored Curylo with the go-ahead run. Pacione then came in on a sacrifice fly by Gauck.
Junior right-hander Jacob Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) earned his first victory of the season by pitching three scoreless innings of relief. Wiley entered the game in the seventh for starter Stephen Peterson (Danvers, Mass.) and allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out three.
Curylo went 4-for-9 in the doubleheader, and junior third baseman Kyle Meyer (East Greenbush, N.Y.) went 3-for-7.
With the two victories, Marist improved to 10-12 overall and 5-4 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. The Red Foxes have played their first three MAAC series on the road. Iona fell to 1-23 overall and 1-8 in the MAAC.
Marist will now play seven consecutive games at home, starting with a contest against Albany on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
