POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's swimming and diving team won four of the first six events in order to defeat the Lehigh Mountain Hawks in a non-conference dual meet 130-113 in the McCann Center Natatorium on Tuesday night. Senior Spencer Hartmann (Windsor, Conn.) and sophomore Kevin Shoemaker (Saucon Valley, Pa.) were double winners in the Red Foxes victory.
Shoemaker led off the night as the third leg of the 400-yd. medley relay with juniors Luke Johnson (Pensacola, Fla.) and Alan Roberts (Middletown, N.Y.) and sophomore Keith Miller (Missoula, Mont.). The foursome finished with a time of 3:33.89. Shoemaker would later win the 200-yd. butterfly with a time of 1:57.46. In the butterfly event, Shoemaker bested the remainder of the field by at least 4.47 seconds.
Hartmann swam to victory in both the 200-yd. and 500-yd. freestyles. He finished the 200-yd. with a time of 1:44.37, while he topped Marist freshman Patrick Shea (Peabody, Mass.) in the 500-yd. freestyle by 0.94 seconds with a time of 4:42.01.
Earlier in the night Shea had a stronger swim in the 1,000-yd. freestyle. He won the event with a time of 9:34.34 seconds, over 16 seconds ahead of the second place finisher, Jon Gorka of Lehigh. Shea's time was just 3.43 seconds behind the school record set by Nick Chevalier in 2004.
The Red Foxes swept the top three spots in 3-meter diving. Sophomore Brian Bolstad (Highland, N.Y.) won with a score of 312.60, junior Mitchell Katz (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) finished second with a score of 262.20 and sophomore Connor Cyrus (Hanover, N.H.) rounded out the field for Marist in third place with a score of 211.05.
Off the 1-meter board, Katz and Bolstad would flip-flop places as the two finished first and second respectively. Katz had a total score of 251.03, while Bolstad amassaed 246.22 points.
With the win, Marist improved to 4-4 overall in dual matches this season.
The Red Foxes will return to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 1 p.m. for a dual meet with the Southern Connecticut State Owls. The Marist College Department of Athletics will honor all the departing seniors prior to the start of the meet.
