POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's swimming and diving team won its first dual meet of the season, behind a convincing 400-yd., freestyle relay from junior Keith Miller (Missoula, Mont.), senior Kevin Quinn (Neponsit, N.Y.), junior Steven Vendetta (South Windsor, Conn.) and junior Joshua Skalnka (Watertown, Conn.). The win in the final event of the night propelled Marist to a 125.5-115.5 victory over Fordham at the McCann Center Natatorium on Thursday night.
Sophomore Kevin Shoemaker (Hellertown, Pa.) won back-to-back swimming events in the 200-yd. individual medley and the 200-yd. butterfly. His time in the IM was 1:57.98, while he finished with a mark of 1:56.10 in the fly. Junior Brian Bolstad (Highland, N.Y.) was also a double-winner in the diving events. He took the 3-meter board with a score of 298.50. Later in the meet he captured the 1-meter event with a score of 284.54.
After the 400-yd. medley relay team took third place, sophomore Patrick Shea (Peabody, Mass.) took first in the men's 1,000-yd. freestyle with a time of 10:03.01.
Miller took the first sprint freestyle event of the evening, the 50-yd. event with a time of 21.94. He also took second place in the 100-yd. freestyle with a time of 48.16 seconds, just .12 seconds behind the top finisher, the Rams' Justin Coombs.
Vendetta won the 500-yd. freestyle with a time of 4:55.17. Freshman Stephen Miller took second place in the same event with a time of 4:56.45. The pair passed Lucien Monson of Fordham in the final 50 yards of the race.
Senior Mitchell Katz (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) took second in each of the men's diving events. His score in the 3-meter event was 260.85, while he scored a total of 244.80 points off the 1-meter board.
Marist (1-0) will return to the pool on Saturday, Oct. 31 as it faces Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Rider in its first MAAC dual meet of the season.
