LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Marist men's swimming and diving team suffered a 170-124 loss to Rider in its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opening dual meet of the 2009-10 season. During the meet sophomore Kevin Shoemaker (Saucon Valley, Pa.) took first place in three events, while junior Brian Bolstad (Highland, N.Y.) won the 3-meter diving.
Shoemaker earned first place finishes in the 100-yd. butterfly, the 200-yd. butterfly and the 200-yd. individual medley. He swam to marks of 52.14 seconds in the 100-yd. fly, a time of 1:56.93 in the 200-yd. fly and touched the wall in 1:59.33 in the 200-yd. IM. Bolstad defeated Paul Apostolakis, a US National qualifier, in 3-meter diving as Bolstad earned 289.05 points in the event. He scored 11.55 points more than his counterpart from Rider.
Marist opened the meet with a second place finish in the 200-yd. medley relay. The team of Joshua Sklanka (Watertown, Conn.), Charlie Pataffi (Middletown, N.J.) finished with a time of 1:40.40. Steven Vendetta (South Windsor, Conn.) followed the relay with third place finishes in the 1,000- and 200-yd. freestyles, respectively.
Junior Keith Miller (Missoula, Mont.) and Pataffi finished in second and third places in the 50-yd. freestyle with times of 22.03 seconds and 22.63 seconds, respectively.
Shea followed up the 1,000-yd. freestyle with a second place finish in the 500-yd. freestyle. His time in the 500-yd. freestyle was 4:53.64.
With the loss, Marist dropped to 1-1 in dual meets this season. The Red Foxes will return to the pool on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Fairfield in a MAAC dual meet. The first race is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
