CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Marist baseball team was defeated by Charleston Southern 4-3 on Sunday in the finale of a three-game series. Red-shirt senior designated hitter Kenny Anderson (Randolph, N.J.) paced the Red Foxes' offense with a pair of doubles and two runs scored.
Marist struck for two runs in the second to take the early lead. Anderson started the scoring with an RBI double, which scored sophomore third baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.), who led off the inning with a double of his own. A double by sophomore center fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) two batters later scored Anderson and made the score 2-0.
The Red Foxes pushed the lead to 3-0 in the fourth when Anderson started a two-out rally with another double. He scored one batter later on an RBI single by junior second baseman John Prano (Oviedo, Fla.).
Charleston Southern tied the score in its half of the sixth by scoring three times, and then pushed across what proved to be the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth when Patrick Dolan's RBI single scored Nick Chinners.
Marist managed just two hits over the final five innings. In the top of the ninth, the Red Foxes had runners at the corners with two outs, but were unable to score the tying run.
Tyler Thornburg, who started the game in right field for Charleston Southern, pitched a scoreless 4.1 innings of relief to earn the victory.
For Marist, junior right-hander B.J. Martin (Manalapan, N.J.) started and gave up two runs in 5.1 innings while striking out eight. Junior right-hander Eric Alessio (Nyack, N.Y.) took the loss (0-1), pitching the seventh and facing the first two batters of the eighth.
Marist, which had won the first two games of the series at Charleston Southern, will return to action on Friday at New Orleans.
