POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Junior Rachel Sunday (Carlisle, Pa.) scored with 33 seconds left in the fourth quarter to give Marist an 8-7 lead but Brown came to tie the game with five seconds remaining and outscored the Red Foxes 2-0 in overtime to win the 2009 ECAC Championships at the McCann Natatorium on Sunday afternoon. Marist was led in scoring by senior Katelin McCahill (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) who scored three goals.
McCahill scored all three of her goals in the first quarter as she traded goals with the Bears. She first got on the board 11 seconds into the game. Her third goal gave the Red Foxes a 3-2 lead with 1:54 to go in the first quarter. Brown tied the game at 3-3 with 50 seconds remaining in the opening period on a Sarah Glick goal. The Bears took the lead in the second quarter on a Bethany Kwoka goal. Marist had two 6-on-5 opportunities to tie the game in the second quarter and could not convert. Brown added one more goal at the 1:35 mark of the second quarter to lead 5-3 at halftime.
Marist got within a goal at the 1:50 mark in the third quarter as Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas) found the back of the cage. Brown put the lead back up two, 6-4, with 1:10 to go in the quarter on a Rory Stanton tally. The Red Foxes got back within a goal with 14 seconds left in the third quarter when Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) scored her lone goal of the game. Brown went back ahead by two early in the fourth, but Marist took control of the quarter from there.
The Red Foxes got a 6-on-5 goal from Sunday with 4:50 to go, followed by a Barnett goal 42 seconds later to tie the game at 7-7. Marist then took the lead for the first time since the 1:54 mark of the first quarter as Sunday scored her second goal of the game, making the score 8-7. Brown had one last chance to tie the game and made the most of it, scoring on a 6-on-5 opportunity with five seconds left to force overtime. The Bears scored first in overtime, getting a goal from Kwoka with 1:56 remaining in the period. Marist had a 6-on-5 opportunity to start the second overtime period but could not score. Lauren Presant then scored with 32 seconds remaining to put the game away for Brown.
Jessica Getchius (Simi Valley, Calif.) had six saves and two steals while in net for Marist. Swartz led the Red Foxes' defensive effort with eight steals and also had two assists. McCahill also had two assists and two steals in Sunday's game.
Marist will be back in action at the McCann Natatorium on Saturday, March 7 as the Red Foxes host the Marist Invitational. The Red Foxes will take on DDO, a club team from Canada, at 10:20 a.m. before playing Brown at 5:20 p.m.
