ANN ARBOR, MICH. - The Marist water polo team went 1-1 in its first two games at the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich. on Saturday. The Red Foxes defeated Mercyhurst 9-5 in their first game of the day, dropping the night cap to the host Michigan 10-2. Senior Katelin McCahill (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) scored five goals on the day.
In the first game of the day, Marist took on Mercyhurst. The Red Foxes shutout the Lakers 4-0 in the first quarter, but Mercyhurst put three tallies on the board in the second quarter to get within two, 5-3, at halftime. The Red Foxes outscored Mercyhurst 4-2 in the second half to get the 9-5 win. McCahill led Marist with three goals as Hilary Schroeder (Santa Barbara, Calif.) had a pair of goals. Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas), Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.), Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) also scored for Marist. Jessica Getchius (Simi Valley, Calif.) had 11 saves and an assist.
Marist fell behind 2-0 to the Wolverines in the nightcap after one quarter. McCahill got the Red Foxes on the board in the second quarter, but Michigan added three more goals to take a 5-1 halftime lead. The Wolverines put the game away in the third quarter, outscoring Marist 3-0 to go ahead 8-1. Michigan added two more goals to win 10-2. McCahill scored both of Marist's goals against the Wolverines with Hillary Walling (Kingwood, Texas) assisting on one of the tallies. Getchius again had 11 saves.
Marist will play two more games in the Wolverine Invitational on Sunday. The Red Foxes will take on Gannon at 9:15 a.m. and Siena at 1 p.m.
