POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist water polo team wrapped up the Marist Invitational with a 2-2 record, defeating DDO-A 13-11 in overtime before falling to #14 Hartwick 16-12. The Red Foxes got three goals each from Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) and Katelin McCahill (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) in the win over DDO. Swartz also led Marist with four goals against Hartwick.
After playing to a 2-2 tie after the first quarter against DDO, the visitors outscored Marist 2-1 in the second quarter to take a 4-3 lead. DDO led 7-5 after three quarters and led 8-5 with 3:40 to go in the game when Swartz and McCahill scored three straight times to tie the game at 8-8 with 54 seconds left to force overtime. Marist went ahead 10-8 with 36 seconds left in the first overtime on goals by McCahill and Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.). DDO tied the game at 10-10 with 1:44 left in the second overtime. Hilary Schroeder (Santa Barbara, Calif.) put the Red Foxes ahead 11-10 with 1:23 left in the game as Rachel Sunday (Carlisle, Pa.) and Rosie Pauli (Sacramento, Calif.) also scored to make the score 13-10.
In the nightcap, Marist and Hartwick traded goals early in the first quarter, playing to a 3-3 tie. The Hawks added three more goals at the end of the quarter to take a 6-4 lead. Each team scored twice in the second quarter to give the Hawks an 8-6 lead. Hartwick put the game away in the third quarter, putting five goals on the board to take a 13-10 lead. Marist scored twice in the fourth but it would not be enough as the #14 Hawks won 16-12. McCahill and Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas) each had three goals to go with Swartz's four. Pauli had three assists for Marist as Jessica Getchius (Simi Valley, Calif.) made 10 saves.
Marist will travel west to Ann Arbor, Mich. on March 14 to play in the Wolverine Invitational at the University of Michigan.
