Game Two Box Score
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Marist baseball team was swept in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday at Brown, falling by scores of 3-2 and 8-2 in a pair of seven-inning games. In the first game, freshmen George Agostini (Rehoboth, Mass.) hit the first home runs of their collegiate careers.
The home runs by Luderer and Agostini were back-to-back in the fourth inning, giving the Red Foxes a 2-0 lead. Marist junior right-hander Richard Cary (Binghamton, N.Y.)did not allow any hits in the first four innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Cary issued a leadoff walk to second baseman Robert Papenhause, and right fielder Dan Rosoff hit a two-run homer to tie the game at two apiece.
With two outs and no one on in the bottom of the sixth with the score still tied at two, Papenhause doubled. Cary was then replaced by freshman right-hander Jake Rifkin (West Deptford, N.J.), who retired Rosoff on the first pitch he threw with a fly out to center to end the inning.
The Red Foxes had runners on first and second with two outs in the seventh, but were unable to push across the go-ahead run. In the bottom of the seventh, third baseman Ryan Zrenda led off for Brown with a single. He then advanced to second on a bunt by shortstop Graham Tyler, who reached himself on a throwing error, putting runners on first and second with none out. Center fielder Steve Daniels then singled to center, scoring Zrenda from second with the winning run.
Cary pitched 5.2 innings, giving up four hits, four walks and two runs while striking out three. Rikin was charged with the loss, as he fell to 1-3. Matthew Kimball, who recorded the final out of the top of the seventh, earned the win for Brown to improve to 2-3.
In game two, Brown batted around in the second, striking for five runs on five hits. The Bears added three runs in the third with the benefit of three Marist errors. Marist got one run back in the fourth on an RBI single by junior third baseman John Prano (Oviedo, Fla.), which scored Agostini. The Red Foxes scored their second run on an RBI triple by sophomore second baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.), which scored senior right fielder Kyle Meyer (East Greenbush, N.Y.) in the seventh.
Agostini and Prano each had two hits for Marist in the second game.
Sophomore left-hander Sean McKeown (Hillsborough, N.J.) took the loss for Marist, falling to 2-2. He was relieved by sophomore lefty Chad Gallagher (Southboro, Mass.), who pitched the final four innings. Gallagher allowed three hits, three unearned runs and one walking while striking out three, and retired the final eight batters he faced.
Josh Feit earned the win for Brown, improving to 2-2. Feit scattered seven hits over five innings while allowing just one run.
Marist will return to action on Wednesday, when the Red Foxes host Army at McCann Baseball Field. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m., and an audio broadcast will be available on GoRedFoxes.com.
