RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team was swept in a doubleheader by Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival Manhattan on Sunday. The Red Foxes dropped the first game by a score of 5-3 in a seven-inning game, and then suffered a 12-5 loss in the second game. Marist now stands at 14-12 overall and 5-4 in MAAC play.

Freshman shortstop Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes by going 4-for-8 with four runs scored in the doubleheader. Schwind went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in both games.

In game one, Manhattan scored first on a two-run homer by catcher Jamie Fitzgerald in the second inning, but the Red Foxes tied it with two runs in the top of the third. Schwind led off with a double and was driven home on a single by senior left fielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.). The Red Foxes then tied the game when McDonough scored on an RBI single by freshman designated hitter George Agostini (Rehoboth, Mass.).

Designated hitter Anthony Armenio put Manhattan back in the lead with a solo homer to lead off the fourth. However, Marist battled back to tie the game at three in the top of the fifth when Schwind singles and later came around to score on a single by sophomore third baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.). Manhattan then scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to put the game away.

Mike Giordano pitched the first six innings to earn the win for Manhattan, improving to 4-1. Tom Moran pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save. Sophomore right-hander Kyle Putnam (New Windsor, N.Y.) took the loss for Marist, allowing four earned runs in 5.1 innings. Putnam fell to 0-2, allowing 10 hits and just one walk while striking out four.

In game two, the Red Foxes got out to an early lead on a two-run single by freshman designated hitter Ben Luderer (River Vale, N.J.) in the top of the first. Marist added three more runs in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead before Manhattan battled back. Manhattan center fielder Kevin Nieto homered to lead off the fourth to cut the Red Foxes' lead to 5-1.

Marist maintained a four-run lead until the seventh inning, when the Jaspers exploded for 10 runs in an inning when they sent 14 hitters to the plate. With the score tied at five apiece, Armenio belted a three-run homer to give the Jaspers the lead for good. Manhattan added a home run in the eighth by right fielder Mike McCann to make the final score 12-5.

Manhattan, which stands in first place in the MAAC, improved to 8-1 in conference play and 15-9 overall.
