POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team dropped two one-run games in a home doubleheader against Albany at McCann Baseball Field on Wednesday. The Red Foxes suffered a 5-4 loss in game one, followed by a 2-1 defeat in the second game. Both were seven-inning games.

The Red Foxes got on the scoreboard first in the game one with two runs in the bottom of the second, as red-shirt sophomore catcher Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) drove home a run on a fielder's choice, and junior first baseman Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.) also scored on the same play due to a throwing error.

Albany took the lead by scoring five times in its half of the fifth to go up 5-2. The Red Foxes cut the Great Danes' lead to 5-3 in the bottom half of the inning when sophomore second baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) doubled and came around to score on a passed ball. In the sixth, Pacione's RBI single made the score 5-4, but the Red Foxes were unable to push across the tying run in the seventh.

Cory Warrings (1-2) earned the game one win for Albany with 1.1 innings of relief, and Sean Gregory pitched the final 2.2 innings of relief for his third save. Junior right-hander Eric Alessio (Nyack, N.Y.) suffered the loss for Marist, falling to 1-2.

In game two, Albany starter Ryan White held the Red Foxes hitless for the first four innings. However, the Red Foxes broke a scoreless tie in the fifth on an RBI double by freshman designated hitter Ben Luderer (River Vale, N.J.), which scored Gauck to give the Red Foxes a 1-0 lead.

Sophomore left-hander Sean McKeown (Hillsborough, N.J.) started game two for the Red Foxes, and took a shutout into the seventh. With one out and runners at the corners, McKeown was relieved by senior closer Jacob Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.). Wiley induced an infield pop-up for the second out. Pinch-hitter Mike Tirri then singled for Albany, driving in designated hitter Ryan Gugel to tie the game, and pinch-runner Pete DiResta scored from first on an outfield error to give the Great Danes a 2-1 lead. Alexander Beaulieu then pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning as Albany completed the doubleheader sweep.

Beaulieu (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings to earn the win. McKeown, who gave up just six hits and zero walks in 6.1 innings while striking out two, was charged with the loss to fall to 1-2.

Albany now stands at 11-16. Marist, who has now dropped five straight, stands at 14-14. The Red Foxes return to action this weekend with a three-game series against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival Rider. The teams will play a doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday, followed by a single game Monday at 3 p.m.
