Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's soccer team clinched a spot in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament with a 2-1 win over Siena on "Kickin' for a Cure," a breast cancer awareness game at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field before a crowd of 1,674 on Saturday. With a record of 10-7 and 6-1 in conference matches, the Red Foxes remain atop the MAAC standings with 18 points.

Marist got goals from sophomore Daniella Burns (Holbrook, N.Y.). Additionally, senior Jamie Balzarini (Holbrook, N.Y.) made four saves to preserve her 10th triumph of the season. Sabia scored her team leading sixth goal of the year and third in the last two matches, while Burns netted her first goal and game-winner of the season.

Sabia opened the scoring in the 2nd minute of the match and got the Red Foxes out to a quick 1-0 lead. She received a cross out of the air from classmate Jackie Frey (Monroe, N.Y.) and half-volleyed the ball into the goal. She beat Siena (13-3, 4-3 MAAC) goalie Elizabeth Barna.

The Marist lead did not last long as the Saints responded 9:59 into the match. Lindsay Tegas notched her fifth tally of the season off a pass from Brittany Pfaff. Pfaff played a through ball on the ground to Tegas and she beat Balzarini to the far post.

Just over two minutes later, Pfaff dribbled into the box and blasted a shot at Balzarini who made the save, her second in the period. The teams headed into the locker room with the score knotted at one.

In the second half, Burns capitalized on a Siena turnover and finished the play with a ground ball to the near post that beat Barna.

For the match Marist posted 19 shots, including 12 in the second half, to Siena's 11. The Red Foxes held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks with two in each half.

In addition to the match, the Marist women's soccer team raised over $850 for breast cancer research, all of which was donated to Miles of Hope, a breast cancer foundation in the Hudson River Valley.

Marist will next prepare for the final weekend of the regular season. The Red Foxes will host Iona in a MAAC match on Friday, Oct. 29. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field.
