POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's water polo team won two games on Saturday to kick off the Marist Invitational as the Red Foxes defeated Boston University 15-5 in the morning and Brown 12-10 in the night cap. Senior Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) led the Red Foxes with seven points on the day, all of which came against Brown. She had four goals and three assists in the match.
In the first game against Boston University, junior Grace Hatcher (Evanston, Ill.) had two goals, two assists and four steals to lead the Red Foxes. Freshman Heather Fellmeth (North Wales, Pa.) notched two goals and two assists in the contest.
Marist opened the game on an 8-0 run, which spanned the first eight minutes of the contest. Fellmeth began the run 19 seconds into the game and it was capped by sophomore Kelly Kline (Reading, Pa.) who tallied the Red Foxes' eighth marker of the match with two seconds to play in the first stanza.
The Terriers cut the lead to five in the second quarter. Three goals by Joanna Chan over a four minute span made the Marist lead 8-3 at the midway point of the contest. Chan scored four of the five Terrier goals in the contest.
Three consecutive Marist goals in the third quarter grew the lead back to eight at 11-3. Hatcher scored all three of the markers at the 5:58, 3:34 and 1:26 marks respectively.
In the night cap against the Brown Bears, senior Emily St. Omer Roy (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) leveled the score at less than one minute into the game. The Red Foxes and Bears continued to trade goals, until Brown's Joanna Wohlmuth scored consecutive tallies to put the visitors ahead 4-2.
The Red Foxes sparked a 3-0 run to take a 5-4 lead at the 5:37 mark of the second quarter. Senior Rachel Sunday (Carlisle, Pa.) scored two of the three, while Swartz kicked off the run at the tail end of the first quarter.
Brown responded with two goals to close out the second quarter and take a 6-5 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Marist outscored Brown 7-4 behind four third quarter goals. Marist took the lead for good on Swartz's third goal of the match at 9-8 with 27 seconds to play in the third quarter.
Senior Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas) had a five point game against Brown behind two goals and three assists. Six different Red Foxes scored a goal in the match. Defensively, senior Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.) and freshman Robyn Crabtree (Cutler Bay, Fla.) had two steals each.
In goal, senior Jessica Getchius (Simi Valley, Calif.) made 11 saves over the two games on the day. She also had three steals in Marist's two victories.
Marist will conclude play at its tournament with two games on Sunday. The Red Foxes will take on the New York Athletic Club program at 9:30 a.m., and #12 Hartwick at 3:30 p.m. Both matches will be played in the McCann Center Natatorium.
