POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Marist baseball team split a doubleheader with Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Manhattan on Saturday at McCann Baseball Field. The Red Foxes suffered a 9-4 loss in game one, but came back to earn a 5-1 triumph in game two.
In the nightcap, senior right-hander B.J. Martin (Manalapan, N.J.) struck out eight and tossed a complete game in the seven-inning contest. The complete game was the first by a Red Fox this season, and it came on Martin's 22nd birthday.
In game one, the Red Foxes were hampered by leaving 15 runners on base. Marist left the bases loaded in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Freshman second baseman Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) led the Red Foxes with two hits apiece.
For Manhattan, third baseman Chad Salem went 2-for-4 with four runs scored and an RBI, while catcher Ramon Ortega went 3-for-5 with an RBI. The Jaspers outhit the Red Foxes 13-9.
Manhattan starter Mike Gazzola (2-2) pitched the first five innings to earn the victory, and Mike Giordano followed with four scoreless innings for his first save of the season. Marist starter Kyle Putnam (New Windsor, N.Y.) took the loss, falling to 3-2 on the season.
In the second game, the Red Foxes broke open a scoreless tie with a three-run second inning. Senior second baseman John Prano (Oviedo, Fla.) drew a bases-loaded walk to force home red-shirt junior catcher Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) with Marist's first run. Senior shortstop Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.) followed with a two-run single to give the Red Foxes a 3-0 lead.
Manhattan scored in the top of the third to cut Marist's lead to 3-1, but the Red Foxes answered with a pair of runs in its half of the inning. Junior left fielder Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) led off the inning with a double, and was driven home on a single by Nugent to make it 4-1. After Nugent advanced to second on a wild pitch, he scored on a two-out single by Shank.
Shank was the only Red Fox to have multiple hits in game two, as he went 2-for-2 with a run scored, an RBI and a walk. He led Marist on the day with four hits.
Manhattan is now 11-8 overall and 1-1 in MAAC; Marist is now 10-9 overall and 1-1 in the MAAC.
The teams will conclude their three-game series on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for noon. Senior right-hander Tom Costigan (2-1, 6.85) is scheduled to start for Manhattan, while the Red Foxes will counter with red-shirt sophomore left-hander Chad Gallagher (1-1, 5.32).
