POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team split a doubleheader with Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) rival Siena on Saturday at McCann Baseball Field. The Red Foxes dropped the first game 11-9 before bouncing back to win 2-0 in game two. Senior right-hander B.J. Martin (Manalapan, N.J.) picked up his fourth win of the season by throwing seven innings for the complete game shutout, scattering four hits while racking up nine strikeouts.

Martin did not walk a batter in the contest. It was the first complete-game shutout by a Marist pitcher this season and the complete game was Martin's second of 2010. In 19 innings against MAAC opponents this season, Martin has yielded only two earned runs.

Game two remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth. Senior Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.) reached on an error with one out and junior Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) followed with a walk. Red-shirt junior Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) lined a single to right, scoring Guack. On the play, Pacione was able to score on Siena right fielder Kyle Hudson's errant throw to give Marist a 2-0 lead. Freshman third baseman Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.) and senior shortstop Rich Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.) recorded Marist's other two hits.

Siena could not manage too much offense against Martin. Gary DerHagopian (1-for-2) and Kevin Quaranto (1-for-3) doubled, and Anthony Giansanti finished 1-for-3 with a stolen base.

Starter Kyle Sumple took the loss for Siena. The right-hander allowed two unearned runs on just three hits over 5.1 innings, but fell to 0-4 on the season. Right-hander Dan Miklas worked out of a bases-loaded jam to end the sixth.

In game one, Siena overcame a 9-3 sixth-inning deficit by scoring eight unanswered runs, including three in the seventh and four more in the eighth, capped off by DerHagopian's 2-run home run to left-center field off Marist junior reliever Sean McKeown (Hillsborough, N.J.). The junior left-hander took the loss for the Red Foxes, falling to 2-1 on the season.

Marist jumped out to its 9-3 lead with two runs in the third, five in the fifth, and two more in the sixth. However, the Red Foxes failed to capitalize on numerous other scoring opportunities, including leaving the bases loaded in both the seventh and ninth innings. As a team, they left 17 men on base. Sophomore center fielder Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.), the reigning MAAC Player of the Week, continued his hot hitting, going 2-for-5 and driving in three runs while freshman first baseman Mike Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Siena took an early 1-0 lead on Quaranto's (4-4, 3 RBI, 3 R) homer to right field leading off the second inning. Designated hitter Larry Balkwill (2-5, RBI) added an insurance run in the ninth with a long double to left-center field. Six different players drove in a run for the Saints.

Marist starter Kyle Putnam (New Windsor, N.Y.) worked the first 6.2 innings for the Red Foxes, allowing six runs (four earned) on five hits while racking up nine strikeouts. Siena starter Zach Hartman did not make it out of the fifth inning, allowing seven runs (three earned) on six hits. Neither starter was helped by their defense, as the teams combined to commit nine errors -- four by Siena and five by Marist -- leading to nine unearned runs.

Giansanti came in from center field to throw a scoreless ninth as he recorded his second save, getting Marist's Zach Shank (Lilitz, Pa.) to ground out to with the bases loaded to preserve the Saints' 11-9 win. Miklas worked two scoreless innings to pick up the win for Siena, improving to 3-0 on the season.

Siena is now 13-16 overall and 2-3 in the MAAC, while Marist is 16-11 overall and 6-2 in the MAAC.

The teams conclude their three-game series on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for noon. Red-shirt sophomore left-hander Chad Gallagher (2-1, 3.89) will get the start for the Red Foxes. Gallagher threw 6.1 shutout innings in his last start at Iona on April 5. Siena will send freshman right-hander Robert Tedesco (3-2, 8.45) to the mound.
