Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team defeated visiting Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponent Saint Peter's 10-3 on Sunday at McCann Baseball Field. The Red Foxes rebounded after dropping both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday, using a couple of big innings to avoid the sweep by plating four runs in the first and five in the seventh.

After being held with just two runs in 16 innings yesterday, the Red Foxes' offense came alive multi-hit games from four different players. Sophomore center fielder Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) led the way, going 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored, two RBI and a stolen base. Senior first baseman Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.) finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI. On his birthday, junior right fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) collected two hits in four at-bats, scoring a pair of runs and driving in two. Junior left-fielder Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.), who also celebrated his birthday on Sunday, went 2-for-3 with a talk, two runs scored and an RBI.

Sophomore left-hander Brendan Chapin (South Weymouth, Mass.) allowed a hit and struck out the side in the ninth, giving the Marist staff 13 strikeouts on the afternoon.

Peacocks' lefty starter Jeremy Ives took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks in 5.2 innings. Craig Hughes came on in relief and allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits and a walk in just 1.1 innings. Conor Mullee, who started the game at second base, worked the eighth and allowed a run on a hit and two walks.

The Peacocks got on the board early against Gallagher. Justin Grimes plated Justyn Carter with an RBI groundout in the top of the first to give Saint Peter's a 1-0 lead. The Red Foxes responded with four of their own in the bottom of the inning. After two quick outs, Schwind doubled and Pacione and red-shirt junior catcher Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) walked on eight straight balls to load the bases. Gallic followed with a single up the middle to score Schwind and Pacione. Gauck followed with a double to right-center to drive in Nugent and Gallic and give Marist a 4-1 lead.

Saint Peter's chipped away at Marist's lead with a run in the third and a run in the fifth. Grimes picked up his second RBI of the day with a sac fly to plate Mike Garcia in the third. Mullee scored on Cody Haack's two-out single in the fifth to make it 4-3.

The Red Foxes extended their lead with five in the seventh. Schwind started the scoring against Hughes by lining a single down the left-field line to plate Prano and Curylo and make it 6-3. Schwind later scored when catcher John Lynch's throw on his steal attempt sailed into left field. Pacione, who reached earlier on a single and advanced to third on the errant throw, scored on a wild pitch to give Marist an 8-3 lead. After Gallic reached on an error and stole second, Gauck doubled to right for the second time to pick up his third RBI and score Gallic to make it 9-3.

Marist added another run in the eighth on a sac fly from Pacione to make it 10-3.

With the win, Marist improved to 24-15 overall and 10-5 in the MAAC, while the loss dropped Saint Peter's to 12-24 and 4-11, respectively.

Marist next plays on April 28, when the Red Foxes take on Army in the fifth annual Hudson Valley Baseball Classic at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, N.Y. First pitch is scheduled for 7:09 p.m.
