All three of his hits in game two went for extra bases, as he belted two doubles and his first home run of the season. Schwind went 5-for-6 with four runs scored and three RBIs on the days. He hit his first home run of the season in the first game. Freshman outfielder Mark Stuckey (Marietta, Pa.) went 4-for-8 on the day with two hits in each game.
In game one, Marist jumped out to a 5-0 lead by scoring once in the second, and then twice in the fourth and fifth. Iona scored three times in the fifth, but the Red Foxes answered with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.
In the eighth, with the score 8-5 and Iona having runners on first and third with one out, junior left-handed pitcher Sean McKeown (Hillsborough, N.J.) entered the game. The first batter he faced - Iona third baseman Chris Burke - hit a sacrifice fly to make the score 8-6, and then he induced a groundout to end the inning. The Gaels were able to get the potential winning run to the plate with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but McKeown induced a pair of fly outs to end the game.
Junior right-handed pitcher Kyle Putnam (New Windsor, N.Y.) earned the game one victory for the Red Foxes. Putnam, who won his team-leading fourth game of the season, tied his career high with eight strikeouts in 6.1 innings. By getting the final five outs, McKeown earned his third save of the season. Iona starter Brian Callahan (1-4) surrendered seven runs in 5.1 innings and took the loss.
The Red Foxes scored at least one run in six of the seven innings in game two, scoring twice in the first, three times in the second and third, four times in the fourth, three times again in the sixth and once in the seventh. Senior shortstop Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.) led off the game with a walk, and Gauck followed by belting a two-run opposite field homer to left field to open the scoring. An inning later, Schwind led off with a walk and scored on a single by Stuckey to make it 3-0. Curylo followed with a home run to left field two batters later to give the Red Foxes a 5-0 lead. An inning later, Schwind's RBI double drove home red-shirt junior catcher Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.), who had reached on a double of his own, to make it 6-0. Stuckey followed with a two-run single to put Marist up 8-0.
Marist batted around in the fourth, sending 10 hitters to the plate and scoring four times to go up 12-1. In the sixth, Gauck's two-run double stakes the Red Foxes to a 14-1 lead, and freshman designated hitter John Prano (Oviedo, Fla.) with the final run of the game.
Senior right-handed pitcher B.J. Martin (Manalapan, N.J.) earned the victory in game two, improving to 3-1 on the season. Martin went five innings, allowed just three hits, no walks and one run while striking out six. Freshman left-hander Dan Zlotnick (Katonah, N.Y.) finished with two scoreless innings of relief, striking out three. Iona's Justin Wiley (2-3) took the loss, giving up seven runs in 2.1 innings.
Marist improved to 13-10 overall and 4-1 in the MAAC; Iona is now 5-16 overall and 0-5 in MAAC play. The teams will conclude their three-game series on Monday, with first pitch set for 1 p.m. Red-shirt sophomore Chad Gallagher (Southboro, Mass.) will start for the Red Foxes, and Iona's starter is TBA.
The doubleheader sweep gives Marist eight series victories out of 10 against MAAC opponents since the start of last season.
