ANN ARBOR, MICH. - The Marist water polo team won its first two games in the Wolverine Invitational on Saturday, defeating Grove City College 16-2, and Mercyhurst 10-7 in game two. Junior Desiree Desaulniers (Orlando, Fla.) tallied nine goals and classmate Jaclyn Puccino (San Diego, Calif.) scored five times to lead the Red Foxes.
In their first game of the day, the Red Foxes scored early and often, jumping out to a 6-1 lead at the end of the first quarter, before shutting out Grove City 4-0 in the second quarter for a 10-1 halftime advantage. Marist and Grove City both scored once in the third and Marist went on to shut out Grove City by a 5-0 margin in the fourth quarter, giving them the 16-2 win. The victory snapped a six-game losing-streak.
Desaulniers and Puccino each scored three goals in the win over Grove City while Senior Katherine Farley (Wilton, Conn.) closed out the multi-goal scorers with two goals each in game one for the Red Foxes. Alexis Solaro (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) made 10 saves for Marist.
Game two began with Marist outscoring Mercyhurst by one goal in each of the first three quarters. The Red Foxes led 3-2 after the first quarter and outscored the Lakers 2-1 in the second quarter to give them a 6-3 lead at the half. After winning the third quarter by a 3-2 margin, Marist and Mercyhurst each scored twice, arriving at a final score of 10-7 in favor of the Red Foxes.
Desaulniers led all scorers with six goals while Puccino found the back of the net two times. Rinker and Konopka contributed one goal apiece in the winning effort.
The Red Foxes will compete in their final two games of the Wolverine Invitational tomorrow in the Canham Natatorium. The first game, against Gannon University, will begin at 8 a.m., followed by a 12 p.m. matchup against tournament host, #7 Michigan.
