ANN ARBOR, MICH. - The Marist water polo team split a pair of games on the final day of the Wolverine Invitational with an 11-5 win over Gannon University, followed by a 12-5 loss to #7 Michigan. Senior Rosie Pauli (Sacramento, Calif.) finished the day with five goals, giving her a team-leading 24 on the season.
In game one, Marist shut out Gannon in the first half 4-0 in the first quarter and 3-0 in the second, to give the Red Foxes a 7-0 advantage at the break. One goal was scored by each side in the third quarter before Gannon outscored Marist 4-3 in the fourth quarter. The Red Foxes' domination of the first half proved to be the difference in their 11-5 victory.
Junior Alexis Solaro (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) made eight saves for the Red Foxes.
In their second meeting of the season, Marist and 7th-ranked Michigan ended the first quarter in a 2-2 tie. The Wolverines exploded in the second quarter, outscoring the Red Foxes by an 8-1 margin and entered the half with a 10-3 advantage. Michigan shut out Marist 1-0 in the third quarter, but the Red Foxes took the fourth quarter by a 2-1 edge. The 12-5 loss snapped Marist's three-game winning-streak.
Pauli scored three goals and Konopka added two more for the Red Foxes.
The Red Foxes return to action March 15-16 as they travel to the west coast to play four games in two days. On March 15, they will take on Cal State San Bernardino and the University of Redlands in a doubleheader at 6 and 10 p.m. eastern time. The following day, Marist will meet Bucknell for the second time this season and then play Cal State Northridge. Opening draws are set for 7 and 9 p.m. eastern time.
The Red Foxes will conclude their west coast swing on Friday, March 18 with a doubleheader against California Baptist and Pacific. Game times are set for 4:30 and 8:15 p.m. eastern time.
