SAN BERNARDINO/REDLANDS, Calif. - The Marist water polo team picked up two wins Tuesday night defeating Cal State San Bernardino 8-6 and the University of the Redlands 12-11. Senior Rosie Pauli (Sacramento, Calif.) led the Red Foxes with five goals, while classmate Agnes Konopka (Simi Valley, Calif.) and junior Desiree Desaulniers (Orlando, Fla.) tallied four goals on the night.
In game one against Cal State San Bernardino, the Red Foxes fell behind 1-0 in the first quarter, but battled back to outscore the Coyotes 2-1 in the second quarter, tying the score 2-2 entering the half. Marist found the back of the net three times in the third quarter compared to San Bernardino's one goal for a 5-3 advantage entering the final quarter of play. Each time scored three times in the fourth quarter, giving the Red Foxes the 8-6 victory.
Konopka, junior Jaclyn Puccino (San Diego, Calif.) and Desaulniers each scored two goals, while Pauli and freshman Yuriria Chavez (Chicago, Ill.) tallied one goal apiece. Konopka recorded four assists and Pauli had a season-high six steals for Marist.
In their second game of the night, against the University of the Redlands, the Red Foxes found themselves in a back-and-forth battle from the opening whistle. After both teams scored three goals in the first quarter, the Bulldogs outscored the Red Foxes 4-2 in the second quarter and took a 7-5 lead into the half. Marist would respond in the second half, outscoring the Bulldogs by the same 4-2 margin in the third quarter and sealing the game with a 3-2 edge in the fourth quarter for the 12-11 win.
Pauli led the Red Foxes with four goals and three steals, while Konopka, Desaulniers, and freshman Katherine Farley (Wilton, Conn.) contributed two goals each. Kelly Kline (Reading, Pa.) scored one goal with three assists and Puccino added one goal to round out the scoring for Marist.
The Red Foxes will play twice more on Wednesday against Bucknell and Cal State Northridge. The game against Bucknell will be their second matchup of the season after meeting at the ECAC Championships back on Feb. 27, where the Bison downed the Red Foxes 10-7. Game times are scheduled for 7 and 9 p.m. eastern time.
