Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score
RICHMOND, Va. - The Marist baseball team won both ends of a doubleheader against Richmond to complete a sweep of the three-game series. The Red Foxes won the first game 12-3 before earning an 8-5 triumph in game two.
Sophomore shortstop Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) was 4-for-10 on the day with two runs scored in each end of the doubleheader, and four RBIs in game two.
In game one, the Red Foxes rolled to victory by scoring three runs in the first, three in the fifth, four in the sixth and two in the eighth. Marist outhit Richmond 17-6, and everyone in the starting lineup had at least one hit. Five Red Foxes enjoyed multi-hit games, as Shank had four, freshman right fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.), red-shirt senior catcher Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) and junior designated hitter Eric Helmrich (Yonkers, N.Y.) had two apiece.
Helmrich led the Red Foxes with three RBIs, while Shank, Gallic, Nugent and junior third baseman Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) had two apiece. Schwind led the Red Foxes with three runs scored, while Shank, Pacione and Gallic all had two apiece.
On the mound, red-shirt junior left-hander Chad Gallagher (Southboro, Mass.) pitched an efficient eight innings to earn the win and improve to 2-0. Gallagher allowed just five hits, two runs and two walks while striking out four. He threw 115 pitches in the contest.
In game two, Marist jumped out to a 7-0 lead largely thanks to the bat of Pacione. After Marist scored once in the first, his two-run single capped a three-run second to give the Red Foxes a 4-0 lead. Then, his two-run homer in the fourth capped another three-run inning as Marist went up 7-0. Richmond fought back with three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to make the score 7-5. However, Marist manufactured an insurance run in the ninth when freshman second baseman Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.) reached on a throwing error, went to second on a sacrifice by sophomore first baseman Mike Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.), advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a balk.
Making his first start of the season, senior lefty Sean McKeown (Hillsborough, N.J.) shined in five innings to improve to 2-0. McKeown allowed just one hit and one walk, and fanned two. Red-shirt senior right-hander Eric Alessio (Nyack, N.Y.) pitched a scoreless ninth and struck out two for his second save of the season.
Marist improved to 6-3; Richmond fell to 3-8-1.
Marist returns to action next weekend with a three-game series at Delaware State. The teams are scheduled to play single games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
