Red Foxes Fall Twice At Princeton Tournament

March 8, 2011

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Marist water polo team was defeated twice at the Princeton Tournament on Saturday. The Red Foxes fell to #20 Maryland 12-8 in the first game, followed by a 13-2 defeat at the hands of #17 Indiana in their second and final game of the weekend. Junior Desiree Desaulniers (Orlando, Fla.) scored three goals, including two goals against #20 Maryland.

Desaulniers and senior Rosie Pauli (Sacramento, Calif.) each scored two goals against Maryland, while a member from each class tallied additional goals for the Red Foxes. Those goals were scored by senior Agnes Konopka (Simi Valley, Calif.), junior Jaclyn Puccino (San Diego, Calif.), sophomore Robyn Crabtree (Cutler Bay, Fla.) and freshman Yuriria Chavez (Chicago, Ill.) .

The Red Foxes fell behind early to the Terrapins in the first game after being outscored 4-0 in the first quarter. The second quarter saw both teams score three goals apiece, leaving the halftime score 7-3 in Maryland's favor. Marist battled its way back in the third quarter by outscoring the Terps 3-2 and reducing the deficit to just three entering the fourth quarter. Maryland went on to win the fourth quarter by a 3-2 margin, arriving at a 12-8 final score.

In game two, Marist once again fell victim to a slow start after being shut-out 5-0 by Indiana in the first half. The second half opened with promise of a comeback by the Red Foxes, as they responded to the Hoosiers with a 2-0 shutout of their own to conclude the third quarter, courtesy of goals by Desaulniers and sophomore Shelby Rinker (Lansdale, Pa.). All hopes of a comeback were drained as Indiana scored eight unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to down Marist 13-2.

The Red Foxes will return to action March 12-13 at the Michigan Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich. They are scheduled to play twice on Saturday, March 12 against Grove City College at 12:15 p.m., followed by Mercyhurst at 4:45 p.m. Marist will play twice more the next day against Gannon University at 8 a.m. and #5 Michigan at 12 p.m. All games will take place in the Canham Natatorium on the University of Michigan campus.
