Water Polo Falls 11-7 To Iona; 7-6 To Siena

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Marist water polo team was defeated twice on Sunday, falling by an 11-7 margin to Iona and 7-6 to Siena in two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Water Polo League matches. Senior Rosie Pauli (Sacramento, Calif.) finished the day with five goals, while junior Desiree Desaulniers (Orlando, Fla.) tallied three goals on the day.

In the first game of the day, against Iona, both sides scored one goal in the first quarter, but the Gaels shut-out the Red Foxes 3-0 in the second quarter for a 4-1 halftime advantage. The third quarter saw both sides find the back of each other's net one time, before both offensives erupted for a combined 11 goals in the fourth quarter. Iona scored six goals to Marist's five in the final quarter, downing the Red Foxes 11-7.

Pauli scored two goals for Marist, while Desaulniers, junior Katherine Farley (Wilton, Conn.) each scored one goal apiece. Crabtree also drew four ejections in the match.

On the defensive end, freshman goalie Alexis Solaro (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) recorded eight saves for the Red Foxes.

The second game saw Marist fall behind 2-1 after the first quarter, before being outscored 3-1 by Siena in the second quarter. Trailing 5-2 entering the second half, the Red Foxes battled back with three goals to Siena's one, to cut the deficit to just one. Both sides scored one goal apiece in the final quarter, as the Saints swam away with the 7-6 win.

Pauli led the Red Foxes with three goals, as Desaulniers tallied two scores and Crabtree added one. In goal, Solaro recorded eight saves and two steals for Marist. Sophomore Shelby Rinker (Lansdale, Pa.) drew four ejections in the match, while Crabtree drew three.

Marist fell to 12-18 overall and 2-2 in the MAAC; Iona improved to 21-7 overall and 4-0 in the MAAC, while Siena moved to 9-12 overall and 2-2 MAAC play.

The Red Foxes will return to the pool next Saturday, April 16, when they travel to New Rochelle, N.Y. for the second week's schedule of MAAC games. Marist will take on Villanova at 10 a.m., followed by a 1:30 p.m. matchup with Siena.
