Marist Water Polo Splits Pair Of MAAC Games On Sunday

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. - The Marist water polo team split a pair of MAAC games on the Sunday at St. Francis' SFC Aquatic Center. In the fourth round of conference round-robin play, the Red Foxes faced off with Iona and Wagner. The fell in the first game by a score of Iona 11-6 and won the second 10-7. With the split the Red Foxes record on the year is 17-19 and 5-3 in the MAAC. Senior Agnes Konopka (Simi Valley, Calif.) led the team with a six goals in the two contests.

In game one, Marist faced off with the MAAC leading Iona Gaels. The two teams battled to a 2-2 tie after the first quarter. Iona got separation in the second as they outscored the Red Foxes, 3-1 to take a 5-3 lead into the half. Coming out in the third quarter, the Gaels put Marist in a deficit, that they would not be able to come back from. Iona won the third quarter by a 5-1 score, making the score as the teams headed into the fourth, 10-4. In the final period, Marist scored two goals versus Iona's one to make the final score 11-6.

Konopka was the leading goal scorer for Marist with two tallies. Other Red Foxes, who notched goals include juniors Jaclyn Puccino (San Diego, Calif.) and Desiree Desaulniers (Orlando, Fla.) and sophomores Robyn Crabtree (Cutler Bay, Fla.) and Heather Fellmeth (North Wales, Pa.).

Defensively, Marist was led by Fellmeth, who had three steals and freshman goalie Alexis Solaro (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.), who made eight saves.

In the second game, the Red Foxes faced another formidable opponent in the Wagner Seahawks. In a back-and-forth first quarter, the teams played to a 3-3 tie after eight minutes. Keeping the momentum after scoring two goals in the first, Konopka notched two more in the second quarter in helping the Red Foxes win the period, 3-1. Coming out of halftime up 6-4, the teams played another even quarter as each squad tallied two goals. Holding a 8-6 lead, Marist started off the fourth on a two-goal run to push the advantage to 10-6. A late Wagner goal made the final score 10-7 in favor of the Red Foxes.

Konopka led the Red Foxes again as she scored four goals. Junior Kelly Kline (Reading, Pa.) just joined by Desaulniers and Crabtree as players with two goals on the afternoon.

Defensively, Desaulniers led Marist with four steals. In goal, Solaro made 13 saves and one steal.
