Water Polo Falls To Harvard In Double OT; Beats Connecticut College

April 2, 2011

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Marist water polo team split a pair of games Saturday afternoon, falling 13-12 to Harvard in double overtime, but bounced back to defeat Connecticut College 18-1 at Blodgett Pool. Among the 14 active Red Foxes, 11 of them scored at least one goal over the course of the afternoon.

In their first game of the day and second game against Harvard this season, the Red Foxes jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first quarter, and outscored the Crimson 4-3 in the second quarter to take a 7-4 lead into the half. Harvard responded with four goals to Marist's two in third quarter, and in the final quarter of play, the Crimson tallied two goals to the one scored by the Red Foxes to force overtime.

The first overtime saw each side score one goal, including two clutch five-meter saves by freshman goalkeeper Alexis Solaro (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) in the final minute of the first, extra period. The game went to a second overtime, where Harvard scored two goals to Marist's one, and claimed the 13-12 victory.

Sophomore Kirsten Siegel (San Diego, Calif.) and classmate Katherine Farley (Wilton, Conn.) also scored one goal apiece.

On the defensive side, Solaro finished with 12 saves including two five-meter saves, and Kelly Kline (Reading, Pa.) recorded a season-high seven steals for Marist.

The second game of the day saw Marist pile on goals early and often, as the Red Foxes jumped out to a 7-0 first quarter lead and took a 10-0 lead into halftime. After scoring seven more goals to Connecticut College's one in the third quarter, Marist hit the brakes in the final quarter and added just one more goal for the 18-1 victory.

Freshman Yuriria Chavez (Chicago, Ill.) and sophomore Heather Fellmeth (North Wales, Pa.) led the way for the Red Foxes, each scoring four goals. Senior Grace Hatcher (Evanston, Ill.) scored three goals while Farley, Siegel and Natalie Stringer (San Diego, Calif.) scored two goals apiece. Freshman Kathryn Knutson (Oakland, Calif.) also found the back of the net one time for her second collegiate goal.

Hatcher also recorded three assists, while Stringer, Knutson and Siegel all added two assists.

The Red Foxes will return to action Saturday, April 9 when they host Senior Day, as well as their first and only two, home Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Water Polo League matches of the season. They will take on Wagner at 10 a.m., followed by St. Francis (NY) at 2:30 p.m. in the McCann Natatorium. Senior Day festivities will take place prior to the 2:30 p.m. game.
