POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - A second-inning grand slam by junior third baseman Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) opened the scoring as the Marist baseball team earned a 10-4 victory over Iona in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game on Friday at McCann Field.
Marist had 12 hits in the contest, as five Red Foxes - sophomore first baseman Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.), junior designated hitter Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) each scored two runs.
Red-shirt junior left-hander Chad Gallagher (Southboro, Mass.) earned his ninth win of the season. Gallagher worked the first six innings and allowed seven hits and three runs. He struck out four and did not walk any batters. Sophomore right-hander Brett Houseal (Landisville, Pa.) struck out the side in the seventh and allowed an unearned run in two innings, and freshman right-hander Kevin McCarthy (Malverne, N.Y.) finished the game by needing just 10 pitches to get through a 1-2-3 ninth.
After Schwind's grand slam gave Marist a 4-0 lead after two innings, Iona struck for two in the top of the third. The Red Foxes answered with two more runs in the bottom of the third, and tacked on three in the fifth and one in the eighth.
Colin Lyall (1-4), who worked the first 3.2 innings, took the loss for Iona. The Gaels had eight hits in the contest, led by left fielder Joe Torres and shortstop Matthew Kriss, who had two apiece. Third baseman Chris Burke had a two-run double in the third.
Marist is now 32-15 overall and 10-9 in the MAAC; Iona fell to 17-29 overall and 7-12 in the MAAC. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon. The first game will be seven innings, followed by a nine-inning second game. Prior to game one, Marist will honor its senior class in a pre-game ceremony.
