CONWAY, S.C. - The Marist baseball team suffered a 17-2 loss to Ohio State on Friday in its opening game of the Chanticleer Classic, hosted by Coastal Carolina. Junior first baseman Mike Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) paced the Red Foxes by going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
The Red Foxes also received multi-hit efforts from freshman second baseman Alec Petrone (Mahopac, N.Y.) and junior shortstop Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.). Petrone went 2-for-5 with a run scored, while Shank was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Ohio State scored once in the top of the first, but Marist answered in the bottom half of the inning when Orefice's two-out single drove home Petrone from second. With the Red Foxes trailing 4-1 in their half of the third, sophomore right fielder Jake Berry (South Hamilton, Mass.) reached on a one-out triple, and Shank followed with an RBI single.
However, Ohio State responded with seven runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and four in the eighth.
Red-shirt senior left-hander Chad Gallagher (Southboro, Mass.) took the loss for the Red Foxes to fall to 1-2. He went three-plus innings and was relieved by freshman right-hander Chris Napolitano (Wall, N.J.), who went the next 4.1. Freshman right-hander Sam Berry (South Hamilton, Mass.) finished out with a scoreless 1.2 innings.
For Ohio State (7-4), Brett McKinney went the first eight innings to record the victory. Second baseman Ryan Cypret paced the Buckeyes' offensive attack by going 3-for-5 with six RBIs and three runs scored, including a fourth-inning grand slam. Ohio State outhit Marist, 17-11.
Marist (2-4) will resume action in the Chanticleer Classic on Saturday against Coastal Carolina. Junior RHP
