Marist Crew Races In The Knecht Cup Over The Weekend

CHERRY HILL, N.J. – The Marist men's and women's crew programs took part in the Knecht Cup this past weekend on the Cooper River. The Red Foxes' boats raced in the initial heats and semifinals on Saturday. The men's Varsity Eight boat was the only Marist squad to advance to Sunday's championship races.

MEN'S TEAM…

The Varsity Eight advanced to the semifinals by finishing third in its heat. Marist's time was 6:04.40, just one second behind Mercyhurst and less than three seconds behind the winner, Drexel. In the semifinal race, the Red Foxes improved their time by more than 10 seconds, advancing to the finals by just .66 seconds ahead of Mercyhurst, who beat them in the first race.

In the Grand Final event, Marist finished sixth in a time of 6:06.05, less than two seconds by the boat from Trinity and less than 10 seconds behind the winner, Drexel. The Red Foxes took sixth place out of 18 teams in the entire event.

The Second Varsity “A” and “B” boats both finished sixth in their respective heats. The “A” squad also had trouble with their start and finished with a 7:54.41 time while the “B” boat raced in 6:30.000, just 3.5 seconds out of fifth place.

The Freshman Four squad took third in its heat, racing to a time of 8:06.08, finishing less than half a second ahead of the boat from West Virginia and well ahead of Liberty.

WOMEN'S TEAM…

The Varsity Four boat finished fifth in its heat, finishing in a time of 8:46.50.

In the Varsity Eight's heat, the Red Foxes took sixth with a time of 7:13.36, just six seconds behind the boat from Fairfield.

The Second Varsity “A” squad finished fifth in a time of 7:29.37, more than 30 seconds ahead of MAAC-rival Fairfield. Racing in a separate heat, the “B” squad had trouble out of the start and finished sixth in a time of 8:27.63.

Both Red Foxes' programs will travel to West Point next weekend for the annual President's Cup race with Army. On Saturday, Marist will look to retain its title in this event, having won all seven events in last year's meet.
