Marist Remains Unbeaten In MAAC Play, Downing Villanova And Siena

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. ? The Marist water polo team (12-11, 4-0 MAAC) continued its impressive start to Metro Atlantic Conference play defeating Villanova (13-11, 1-3 MAAC) by a score of 10-3 in the first game on Sunday morning. The Red Foxes faced Siena (7-12, 0-3 MAAC) after senior night recognitions and cruised to a 17-3 victory.

Game One: Marist 10, Villanova 3

Senior Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) and sophomore Amanda Amorosa (Montreal, QC) led the team with three goals apiece. Amorosa also had two assists, while J. Hamby had one. Senior captain Hannah Levien (Davis, Calif.), and freshman Diana Carballo (Mexico City, Mexico) each had one goal and one assist. Senior captain Anna-Lena Hathaway scored a goal on a penalty shot, and McQuade grabbed a goal to finish out the scoring for the Red Foxes.

Villanova jumped on the board first with a goal at the 3:46 mark in the first quarter. Two minutes later Amorosa sent one to the back of the net to tie the game up at one all. The Red Foxes would score first in the second quarter with Amorosa and McQuade scoring goals just 26 seconds apart. Levien scored the Red Foxes third goal of the quarter at the 1:32 mark to give the Red Foxes a 4-2 lead at halftime.

The Marist defense came out of halftime and held the Villanova offense scoreless in the third quarter. The Red Foxes got goals from J. Hamby and Amorosa to extend their lead to 6-2. Hathaway got the scoring started for the Red Foxes in the fourth quarter scoring on a penalty shot 27 seconds into the quarter. Three more Red Foxes goals from J. Hamby, Carballo and Amorosa, and one from the Wildcats, brought the game to a final score of 10-3.

Junior goalie Skyler Henry (San Diego, Calif.) made nine saves and gave up two goals against in the win for Marist. Freshman goalie Jessica Hermosillo (La Mirada, Calif.) came in the game with 3:42 left in the game and made one save and gave up no goals.

Game Two: Marist 17, Siena 3

The Red Foxes scored early and often in their second game of the day, having eight different individuals find the back of the net. Amorosa led the team once again tying her season-high with five goals and adding four assists. Carballo collected a hat trick and assisted on one goal. Freshman Celeste Brown (Carmichael, Calif.) and J. Hamby, and senior Jamison Mahar (Riverside, Calif.) each added two goals for the Red Foxes.

Amorosa scored the game's first goal 27 seconds into the game. Two goals from Siena, and two goals from Mahar and Carballo ended the first quarter with a score of 3-2. The Marist offense found its stride in the second quarter putting up five goals on the Siena defense. Amorosa scored twice, while J. Hamby, McQuade and Carballo each added a goal. The Red Foxes went into halftime up 8-2.

The Red Foxes outscored the Saints 2-1 in the third quarter, grabbing goals from Amorosa and J. Hamby. Marist had its most productive quarter of the day in the fourth quarter putting up seven goals to Siena's zero. Brown led the way with two goals, while Amorosa, McGlothlin, Carballo, Else, and Mahar each tallied a goal to give the final score of 17-3.

Junior goalie Henry picked up the win for Marist, making six saves on two goals against. Freshman goalie Hermosillo came into the game after the half and made five saves and gave up just one goal.

The Red Foxes return to action on Saturday, March 28 with MAAC games against Wagner and VMI. Game times are scheduled for 12 p.m. and 4 p.m.
